Coordinated Relief and Solidarity Efforts for victims of Asian Tsunami disaster - 15 schools - January 2005 -Raised a total of over $16,000 for relief efforts of Catholic Relief Services

Beaumont High School

  • Focused school prayers for the victims of the Tsunami disaster.

  • Posted informational signs throughout school building

  • Collection of money

  • Additional fundraiser involved raffling off a donated 10lb candy bar.

Holy Name High School
  • Sold "Relief Wave" wristbands with money to benefit Catholic Relief Services Tsunami Relief Fund

  • Had various prayers throughout the school for the victims of the Tsunami

  • Collection of money in addition to the money raised by selling the "Relief Wave" wristbands

John Carroll University

  • Had a nighttime prayer service for victims of the Tsunami disaster.

  • Students and faculty had the opportunity to fast and the dining hall donated money fromparticipants who have meal plans.

  • Sold "Relief Wave" wristbands with money to benefit Catholic Relief Services Tsunami Relief Fund

Lake Catholic High School

  • Prayed as a school and in individual classes for tsunami victims and will continue throughout this year.

  • Week of collections.

  • Donations to Catholic Relief Services Tsunami Relief Fund

Magnificat High School

  • Prayer services for theology classes

  • Lunchtime collections

  • Local organization willing to match student donations to South Indian Ocean Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund

Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School

  • Offered morning prayers for the victims

  • All school collection.

  • Sold Tsunami Relief Bracelets

  • Donations to NDCL graduate and medical student who leaves in February for southern India were he will be aiding in tsunami relief

Padua Franciscan High School

  • Forty-minute all school prayer service focused on solidarity with the human family throughout the world

  • Two days of optional fasting from lunch to be in solidarity with victims (donation of lunch money for relief efforts). Provided bottled water and “Relief Wave” solidarity wristbands to students and faculty fasting.

  • Basketball 3-point shootout to raise money for relief efforts

  • All school collection at lunch

  • Donations to Catholic Relief Services Tsunami Relief Fund

St. Edward High School

  • Prayer service connecting the work of Martin Luther King Jr. with the need for service and concern for others in southeast Asia

  • Had Tsunami Benefit Dinner for the larger community that served about 800 - 900 people

  • Sold "Relief Wave" wristbands with money to benefit Catholic Relief Services Tsunami Relief Fund

St. Ignatius High School

  • Lunchtime prayer services

  • Sold "Relief Wave" wristbands with money to benefit Catholic Relief Services Tsunami Relief Fund

  • Had mission collection to benefit Jesuit Relief Services

St. Joseph Academy

  • At an all school Mass celebrating Catholic Schools Week, teachers from the school’s Justice Committee did a presentation on where the tsunami occurred, what it is, and who was impacted.

  • Later in the week, the school community started the day with Eucharistic Adoration, some students took a pledge of silence in the halls throughout the day, and then had an all school prayer service. The whole effort focused on thanksgiving for the gift of Catholic education and awareness of the responsibilities that gift entails.

  • Filled out sacrifice cards offered for the victims of all natural disasters that one placed in a prayer basket in front of the Blessed Sacrament

  • Lunchtime collections each day of the week

  • Donations to Catholic Relief Services Tsunami Relief Fund

St. Martin de Porres High School

  • Celebrated mass together and prayed for Tsunami victims and those currently providing aid and relief.

  • Introduced www.thehungersite.com to students, which provides the opportunity to donate to relief services on this site each time they use the computers for class.

Trinity High School

  • Held prayer services for victims of tsunami

  • Held collections

  • Students donated their old Theology books which were sold at half price to the new Theology students and donated the money to relief efforts

  • The principal checked parking permits in the student parking lot. Students who parked illegally were given a fine that was donated to relief efforts.

Ursuline College

  • Held various fund raising events for relief efforts:

  • UC Serves Student Organization sponsored a Warm Cookie and Cold Milk Sale in the Resident Hall on Thursday Evening.

  • Commuter Student Organization hosted a Pizza Luncheon for Faculty, Staff, and Commuters.

  • Campus Ministry employed the use of three Piggy Banks placed in the college’s Grille, Print Shop and Registrar/Bursar Office.

  • On January 14 while the Bishop celebrated Mass in honor of the tsunami victims, Ursuline College had Mass at the same time with the same intention. For non-Catholic population, held an interfaith prayer service the same day.

Villa Angela St. Joseph High School
  • Held a prayer service in religion classes

  • Held a weeklong fundraiser

  • Have several students committed to keeping our school updated on ongoing situations every week throughout the school year.

Walsh Jesuit High School
  • Sold "Relief Wave" wristbands with money to benefit Catholic Relief Services Tsunami Relief Fund
